Fact-Based Sex Education
Sex education must be inclusive, medically accurate, and available to all ages in our publicly funded K-12 schools. The curriculum must have factual information for LGBTQ2+, disabled, and heterosexual students so that all young people have the information to live a healthy life. The CDC has deemed sex education to be essential, and yet, fewer than half of the high schools in the country are teaching medically accurate sex education.
Problem
Less than 30 states require any sex education to be taught to students. In fact, states and local jurisdictions can dictate whether LGBTQ2+ identities are even mentioned, which is unacceptable and denial of dignity for people. Even in NYC, schools are currently in a lawsuit for failing to investigate four different accounts of sexual harassment and rape that had been reported to them.
Our Plan
Students and communities deserve equal access to sex education that is relevant for all gender identities and cultures.
Pool a statewide fund from existing property taxes for sex education, so each student regardless of zip code receives equal access to sex education resources.
School districts will supplement sex education design and teacher training, by partnering with Planned Parenthood, a top comprehensive sex education curriculum provider.
Increase funding for the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP).
Implement the National Sexuality Education Standards
Outline the minimum needs for each grade’s sex education lessons.
This Matters
Sex education is learning to respect our communities. For young people to engage in safe practices, they need a complete education that at a minimum covers consent, safe touch, STDs/STIs, pregnancy/abortion planning options, birth control.
